Impulse Filter Guide for Custom Shooting Earplugs

These filters are non-linear. That means their attenuation changes depending on the sound level — they react dynamically:

In quiet or moderate environments (no impulse trigger): they provide lighter attenuation.

During a sudden impulse (gunfire), they slam shut acoustically and provide high protection.

The higher the dB rating, the more it blocks both during quiet conditions and impulse events.

  • The 9 dB feels the most open – great for awareness.
  • The 12 dB feels more “closed off” – better for high-volume protection.
  • The 19 dB offers the most protection – ideal for indoor ranges or sustained high-calibre fire.
